To us avid twitterers within the Twitterverse, hashtags have become a way to not just identify the topic of our tweet; they enable us to reach other users who may not follow us but are interested in the topic we’re tweeting about.
For those of you new to the term, a “hashtag” is basically a keyword or term that classifies your tweet concerning a particular piece of information you’re trying to spread. It is also always lead by the number symbol (#). One of the first, rarely used steps of using hashtags is defining your hastag. The site to do that is http://tagal.us.
Defining Your Hashtag
Once you are at the site, go to the “@tagulus define #” space and type the term you want to define. After you type in your term, in the box below, write out the definition of the term of which you want it assigned.
Congrats! Your tag has been added to Tagalus!
However, you’re not done yet. This next step is where you get your fellow Twitterers involved. What gives credibility to your definition is authority, people who believe that your definition of the term is the correct definition.
On the right hand side of the screen, there is a current Twitter, Flickr, and YouTube feed concerning your hashtag and how other people are using it. Also, below your definition are spaces for others to leave their proposed definition and comments. So, in order to gain full ownership and dependability to your newly defined term, spread the word to your friends and ask them to help make it your own.
That’s it! Your hashtag is now yours!
